The best solutions from Feltdecor practice.

When does adhesive for panel installation matter?

With the installation of acoustic panels is like with many seemingly simple stages of finishing – only in practice it turns out that it is the details that determine the final effect. The project is ready, felt panels for the wall delivered to the site, everything looks perfect on visualizations, and meanwhile the team stands in front of the wall and… the first question arises:
“What glue should we use?”
In a moment, another one:
“Is ordinary mounting glue enough?”
“And how to spread it so that the panel sticks well and does not damage the surface?”

And then it turns out that it is not the installation itself that is the problem, but the details.
Because while the panels can be cut, fitted, installed – the wrong adhesive can ruin the whole job.

This is the point at which even the best-prepared installation can come to a standstill. Although felt acoustic panels look lightweight and easy to install, securing them in place so that they remain durable, clean and safe does require some basic knowledge and a little experience, but above all, the right product. The wrong adhesive can not only spoil the appearance, but also compromise the panel’s performance; after all, a felt panel is meant to improve the acoustics, not create new problems.

At Feltdecor, we know that proper installation is half the battle.
No acoustic felt panel, however good, will fulfil its purpose if it isn’t fixed correctly. If it’s too loose, it won’t support heavier panels. Too firmly – it may sink into the felt’s structure and leave visible discolouration or make removal much more difficult. That is why it is worth considering the installation method right from the space design stage – especially when it comes to bespoke felt acoustic panels, which are intended to create a cohesive, aesthetic composition on a wall or ceiling. It is in details like these that the difference between a run-of-the-mill production and one that truly makes an impression becomes apparent – both visually and acoustically.

Which adhesive for felt panels to choose? Our proven solution.

At FeltDecor, we have been testing various mounting systems for years – from dispersion adhesives, to polyurethane adhesives, to modern hybrid adhesives.
We know one thing from experience: polymer adhesives work best, combining high bonding strength with flexibility and a clean visual effect. Hybrid adhesive-sealer

For the installation of felt panels on acoustic walls and ceilings, we most often use FixAll Turbo polymer adhesive (in the 290 ml version).
This adhesive offers very high initial strength and a fast set – meaning you don’t need to use additional supports or temporary fixings, which significantly speeds up the work and eliminates the risk of smudging. An SMX hybrid polymer-based adhesive offering high bond strength. The joint can be loaded after just 20 minutes. It also bonds damp materials. When installing or gluing panels to ceilings, you can hold the panels in place for longer to allow the adhesive to set, or use additional fastening in the form of double-sided tape.

Why this adhesive for acoustic panels?

Instant initial grip (after just a few seconds),

Durable flexible joint – does not crack and does not transmit vibrations,

Solvent- and odor-free – safe in enclosed spaces,

It is suitable for both absorbent surfaces (plaster, gypsum, wood) and smooth surfaces (board, MDF).

Does not penetrate the structure of the material and does not cause discoloration. It creates a flexible, durable bond that is resistant to moisture and temperature changes, making it ideal for offices, hotels and apartments.

One tube (290 ml) is sufficient on average for approximately 3 m² of bonding, i.e. for one large panel measuring 120 × 240 cm. Apply the adhesive directly to the panel, not to the wall, ensuring you leave a small gap from the edge (2–3 cm) to prevent it from oozing out when pressing down. This method allows for a clean installation without drilling, which is particularly important in modern interiors where precision is key.

The glue is easy to remove, if you make a mistake, there are no problems with pulling off or even scraping off the glue once it has set.

In our projects, from open plan offices to hotel spaces, it has proven its effectiveness time and again. It’s what keeps our felt acoustic panels perfectly adhered, aesthetically pleasing and durable for years to come.

How to properly glue a felt acoustic panel – step by step

Installing TileFlex acoustic panels made from PET felt is a simple process, but one that requires precision. Proper preparation and application of the adhesive ensure a durable, attractive and secure installation. At FeltDecor, we recommend installing the tiles using the adhesive method – in accordance with the official TileFlex instructions.

1. tool preparation

Before you begin installation, prepare:

A level, measuring tape, pencil, ruler and wallpaper cutter,

polymer mounting adhesive, such as FixAll Turbo 290 ml,

A clean, dry cloth for possible removal of excess glue.

2. surface preparation

The surface of the wall must be clean, dry and degreased, free from dust, dust, paint residue and grease.
In the case of raw plaster, it is recommended to prime it. This is important because excessive absorbency can weaken the adhesion of the adhesive.

Tip: dirt and dust are the most common cause of panels peeling off later.

3. plan the layout of the panels

Before you apply the glue, lay the panels on the floor and plan the layout of the pattern.
Determine whether the composition will run from wall to wall, or arranged in geometric disarray. The first panel is crucial, the correct alignment of the other elements depends on it.

4. apply glue – only to the panel

Apply glue to the back side of the panel, not to the wall.
Keep a distance of 2-3 cm from the edge to avoid flowing out.
The glue layer should have:

Up to 0.5 cm thick – with a smooth wall,

Up to 1 cm thick – for rough surfaces.

According to our recommendations: too thick layer of glue can lead to uneven adhesion of the panel and the formation of gaps.

5. installation and pressing of panels

Apply the panel to the wall surface andPress firmly for about 30 seconds .
Make sure each panel is aligned with the others – especially with geometric layouts or 3D patterns.
When installing an acoustic ceiling, it is recommended to lightly support the panel until the adhesive has initially set.

6. setting time and control

FixAll Turboadhesive achieves a strong grip after just a few seconds, but gainsfull strength after a few hours.
Do not move the panels during this time. Once it has set, check that all the parts are evenly aligned.

If excess glue has flowed out at the edge, remove it immediately with a soft, dry cloth – without spreading it over the felt.

7. estimated adhesive consumption

One tube (290 ml) is sufficient to cover an average of approx. 3 m² of surface area, which corresponds to approx. one 120 × 240 cm tile or nine 600 × 600 mm TileFlex panels (depending on the laying pattern)

8. Cleaning and maintenance

Once installation is complete and the adhesive has dried, the panels can be gently dusted or cleaned with a damp cloth and a mild detergent.
Do not scrub them or use harsh chemicals.
If necessary, you can use a low-temperature steam cleaner – gently and without applying pressure.

What could go wrong? The consequences of choosing the wrong adhesive

Choosing the wrong adhesive for PET felt acoustic panels is a mistake that could end up costing more than you might think. At first glance, the differences between adhesives may seem minor, but in practice they determine the durability, appearance and safety of the entire installation. Using the wrong adhesive will not only reduce the bond strength but may also cause permanent damage to the panel material.

One of the most common problems is that the panels peel off a few days or weeks after installation. This happens when the adhesive has insufficient bonding strength or is not suitable for materials such as PET acoustic felt. As a result, the felt wall panels begin to come away from the wall, and gaps form at the joints, which detract from both the visual and acoustic quality.

The second risk is discolouration and deformation. Adhesives containing solvents or chemically aggressive substances can penetrate the felt’s structure, causing darker stains or surface deformation. This is particularly noticeable with light colours, such as the Desert Sand (beige) shades from the S-line colour palette – where even a small amount of adhesive outside the edge becomes visible.

Another common mistake is applying too thick a layers of adhesive. Contrary to what one might think, ‘more’ does not mean ‘better’. Excess adhesive creates an uneven surface and can lead to bulges. According to the TileFlex instructions, the adhesive should be applied in a layer no thicker than 0.5 cm on a smooth wall or 1 cm on a rough wall, leaving a 2–3 cm gap from the edge of the panel. Any deviation from these rules increases the risk of assembly errors.

An unsuitable or incorrectly applied adhesive can also affect the acoustics. If the panel does not adhere evenly, micro-air gaps form, which alter the way sound is absorbed. As a result, the sound-absorbing panel loses some of its properties and no longer meets the standards that TileFlex achieves under laboratory conditions.

Finally, there is the aesthetic and maintenance aspect. Poor-quality adhesive often makes it difficult to remove or replace the panels. The wrong product can damage the plaster, leave stains or peel off the paint, resulting in additional costs and delays in finishing your project.

That is why choosing the right adhesive is not just a matter of convenience, but also an investment in the durability, safety and aesthetics of the entire project

How to avoid mistakes when installing felt panels – FeltDecor’s best practices.

We know from experience that even the best design can lose its impact if the installation is not carried out with precision. That is why, when installing PET felt acoustic panels, it is worth following a few simple rules:

A clean surface is key.
The wall must be dry, degreased and smooth. Dust or paint residue can reduce the adhesive’s holding power.

Apply the glue sparingly.
Don’t apply it too close to the edge — leave a gap of 2–3 cm.
A layer of up to 0.5 cm (smooth surface) or 1 cm (rough surface) is sufficient.

Don’t rush to apply pressure.
Position the panel, align it, then press down evenly from the centre towards the edges.
Allow the adhesive enough time to set – even the quick-drying FixAll Turbo needs a few hours to reach its full strength.

Make sure everything looks neat and tidy.
Start by using a spirit level and check that the pieces fit together without being glued.
A clean application = no streaks or smudges, and a flawless finish.

By following these simple guidelines, installing felt panels on the wall will be quick, neat and long-lasting. It is the details – such as precision, moderation and patience – that ensure your project will look perfect for years to come.

If you have any further questions, please get in touch!
